Why do people always criticize functionality? Why is that the first thing that comes to mind?

I honestly was having a hard time critiquing David Bowie’s clothing collection but then we as a class did something awesome. We looked at the context of its creation. The time period, the movements, the politics…etc

And you could slowly see the value in the what I am calling Onion dress. But without the context (the time period, who David Bowie is) I can see why Testadura would resort to just pure functionality.

Is this the reason people always critique things in terms of functionality? Lack of context? Is lack of understanding the reason for “how can I use this?” Or is there something else?
